Originally posted by stevebrot To be honest, one of the reasons I quite being active there was because I got tired of denying hundreds of people's vacation and pet snapshots.
Given that many users will have day-to-day jobs they need to attend to, and people also tend to shoot things they love and care for, those kinds of subjects are only to be expected, I guess. I'm certainly guilty of shooting and uploading a lot of those, although I do try to take them beyond mere snapshots.
However, the sheer number and, let's face it, often mediocre quality thrown at you in these voting situations can be pretty exhausting. I also recall that, towards the end of my regular visits to the gallery, I couldn't shake the feeling that the overall quality of images submitted for voting was deteriorating. But maybe that's just me, or me becoming pickier over time.
When I'm making this kind of comment, I really don't want to badmouth something I regarded, in its heyday, as something quite worthwhile and a true Pentax differentiator. Nothing wrong at all with giving some prominence to and thus showing appreciation of the actual photography users are producing with Pentax gear. Helps with fostering brand loyalty and, if done properly, can even generate sales, I think. Frankly, I'm quite susceptible to that kind of marketing, which played a significant role in winning me over to the Pentax system in the first place. By letting PPG slowly die, without coming up with a worthy replacement, Ricoh Imaging is missing out on a serious opportunity IMO.
