Apart from written formula, it is hard to keep a bunch of variables in your head while you think about how they inter-relate.
If the background is fairly distant, equations aren't needed.
1. Pick a focal length wide enough to include the parts of the background you want and narrow enough to exclude the parts of the background you don't want.
2. Position your camera or foreground subject to to fill the frame as needed.
