Agreed, that's almost certainly the case... but my point being, not all formal / institutional training is necessarily better than self-taught. Dedication, structure and ability (on both sides of the lecturn) count for a lot

There were days sarcasm was the only thing that kept me sane, in my classroom.

Getting back to the point of this thread, I'm not quite sure how you would define 'compression' in a system of equations, and I certainly have never seen an equation perporting to express 'compression' in terms of distance and lens focal length. Apart from written formula, it is hard to keep a bunch of variables in your head while you think about how they inter-relate.

I think the whole point of the video is that you get the same compression with a 50mm lens on APS-C that you would with a 75mm lens on full frame. Some people think that you would get more with the full frame lens because it is "longer," but assuming your framing is the same and distance to subject is the same, they should look about the same.

If the background is fairly distant, equations aren't needed.

1. Pick a focal length wide enough to include the parts of the background you want and narrow enough to exclude the parts of the background you don't want.

2. Position your camera or foreground subject to to fill the frame as needed.

My mom always told me ain't is not a word. It is now, I was ahead of my time! I also find it extremely funny that anarchists are extreme language police.
This is the 10 rulz ya need.
HOW TO WRITE GOOD.
1 avoid alliteration always.
2 prepositions are not words to end sentences with.
3 avoid cliches like the plague, they are old hat.
4 comparisons are as bad as cliches.
5 be more or less specific.
6 wriers should never generalize.
Seven be consistent
8 don't be redundant. Don't use words more than necessary. It's highly superfluous.
9 who needs rhetorical questions?
10 exaggeration is a billion times worse than understatement.

Oh, I know how to do it. My own personal style depends largely on context, so I need deep DOF; I probably provide more DOF that I need most times, but my style isn't hurt by providing too much. My comment was directed at attempting to determine where DOF comes from, because in most comparable situations you change both distance and lens focal length so our intuition doesn't have much experience to draw on.

Over nine rounds, Timb64? Feisty Roger of course.

I like Richard's comedy, but to be honest, my six year old niece would secure a knockout thirty seconds in.

That was my thought too, because I remember kelby being wrong about it, and assumed someone else might be confused about it too. I honestly stopped caring about it, i just use longer lenses for head shots and never run into issues with distorted faces
