What Do You Shoot At Mid-Day In The Full Sun?

.
For years, when it was mid-day and the sun was full, I'd put down my camera and find something else to do.

These days, when it's hot and the sun is blazing I pick up my infrared camera and shoot away. I find such harsh conditions for normal shooting are ideal for IR photography (especially if there's some nice clouds in the sky).

What do you shoot when the sun is high and the light is harsh?

Flowers, landscape, macros, almost anything. They just usually aren't as good as ones taken in better light.

This one taken at 2 o'clock.

Street photography in tall cities. Midday is one of the few times when sunlight reaches the ground.

Closeup details. Architecture, plants.

Interiors.

We have a slot canyon just outside of town. It’s about 30ft deep and 5-8 ft wide. High noon is the best time to go.

Dragonflies, since your shadow doesn't bother them then.

Butterflies and bumble bees since peak heat is also peak nectar production time.

In Winter, Spring and Fall, almost anything. In Summer, not too much because of the heat. It was over 100F when I took this shot:

Much of my travels/photo opportunities in Asia are during the height of the day, never found it a problem.OK the light in the golden hours is a lot better, but close to the equator those periods are extremely short.

While certainly not my preferred ambient lighting, harsh midday sun is often what I have to make work when I travel with the family or with students.

It can be tamed in a number of ways, for example by embracing it for sunburst shots, by utilizing open shade and internal framing, or doing indoor shooting.

All of the images below were taken sometime around noon, and I wouldn't have them if I had decided that there was "no beautiful light happening" and had left the camera in the bag.

Things inside my house.
Since the light comes from a window, it's at an angle even at midday.

Original thread idea...I like it. It's the perfect time to be in and shoot in the woods!

Shot at Noon O' Three:

1:48 PM with a clear blue sky

The middle of Summer without a cloud in the sky... the trees diffused this one very nicely:

I mostly photograph small things, so sun can be easily modified with a very portable 5-in-1 reflector/diffuser. With flowers/fungus, I'll often work with the sun as a back light with either a reflector or a flash thrown into the mix (this is a single bare flash off to the right):

For me its pretty much what the others have mentioned: macro, overcast environments like forrests and some architectural stuff. But I do find myself taking a lot more and nicer pictures in the morning and evening. And, before I forget, nice photo, BrianR!
