Flattering, but ...

... the top photo in this story ("supplied") was actually taken by me, it's an unauthorized use!

I think it was the DA12-24 on a K-30, for those who want to know what a hard-hitting photojournalist uses.

Wow, that stinks Ian. Maybe leave a " nice " comment at the bottom of the story.

They were smart enough to leave it out of the print edition. In the past, they'd bother to seek out the rights holder to a photograph, now the game is you use anything you can get your hands on, and apologise if caught, removing the pic. Because it's online and ephemeral, it's served its purpose. It would cost more than $200 to try to get $200 out of the publishers, Fairfax.

You can at least screenshot the page, then send 'em an invoice with a printout of same. Ask them for $500, as it was unauthorised use. Send another copy of the invoice at regular intervals. You may not get any money, but you'll have given them some aggravation. Better than just rolling over and taking the blow.

Sorry to hear that... I wouldn't know what's best... if a letter from the lawyer, an email letting them know that you know (but if you did nothing they'll probably think they can get away with it and do it again...), , a nice baroque frieze on the door of the editor's car... just so they know you're a true artist, you know...

I see down at the bottom of the article the reporter's names and titles - one of which, being Cameron Houston Senior Crime Reporter. Senior Crime Reporter - sounds appropriate. They now have a new "crime" story to report on.....

Not good art, to be sure (it's an impromptu shot, we're long time opponents on the cricket field and we ran into each other), but for the sub-editor it did have both subject and story context, so he wanted it.

While kudos to you Clackers for a great shot, that really sucks they have no integrity.

Good shot for the purpose that they used it for. I agree with the "print out the page and send them an invoice" strategy. Do it more than once and end up by emailing the editor directly. If they don't even respond you can send the info to another news outlet.

So, you're the supplier Clackers! Can you recall supplying your photo?

Seriously now, this is so wrong and illegal. They could give credit to the photgraphers after getting their permission but some people don't seem to bother.

I like that at the bottom there's a 'Licence this article' link. Why not just follow their example and steal it?

They didn't even pay you with the mythical 'exposure'!

Well, it captures his personality, features a fitting context and environment for your eyes to wander around, yet he's still the dominant focus of the frame. Even if you don't classify it as art, I think it's a great portrait

I know this won't apply to you, but it reinforces the concept for U.S Citizens to pay the bucks and officially register their work with the Copyright office. That simple act gives legal tooth in the form of some pretty hefty statutory damages for use without permission.
