I'm actually OK with this. Pentax is ultimately responsible for supporting the Sony sensor included in its cameras,
along with every other third party element. I have no qualm, (or at most minimal), with the quality of Sony
products. Sony makes pretty good products. Sony are also very innovative and have an incredible knack for
making cutting edge products you want to buy.
A point of comparison: My very first digital camera was a HP C618. I choose it because it allowed for a good
deal of manual operation, but also because it had a Pentax lens, (Pentax cameras were non-existent on local
shelves; go figure). I liked the camera, but it quickly developed a noise problem, one that got worse quickly.
I contacted HP support, who acknowledged the problem, informed me the C618 was discontinued then offered
a vastly inferior camera as replacement, (C812). I escalated the problem up the chain of authority at HP, insisting
that the replacement be a camera of equal or greater capability. HP wouldn't budge. That incident put me off HP
as a brand and I've shied away from their products ever since. Why bother with a company that doesn't support
its products when there are so many different brands to choose from? Did I also turn my back on Pentax because
the camera had a Pentax lens? Of course not. For one, it wasn't the lens that failed. But even if the lens had failed,
it would still have been HP that was responsible for supporting the camera and all its components.
Sony have let me down numerous times across a range of products; audio, computing, gaming, music, etc. They've
dropped the ball on everything from poor product support to failed product support to abandoned technology and even
tyrannical policies. Most of this was well before Sony bought Minolta and got into the camera biz, but those prior
experiences all still resonate. Again, why bother with Sony when their are so many other good manufactures of audio,
video, computers and indeed,cameras?
