If nothing else, it's certainly a confidence building exercise.
I see your point. You have to interpret silence as critique to improve. It's not very specific, though, so not nearly as efficient as a learning tool. Mind you, I'm encumbered with a mindset that says "If I don't succeed it's because I'm no good. If I do succeed it it must be because it's easy." I need all the confidence building I can get

IMHO, getting better is a confidence challenging exercise, because it involves leaving our comfort zone and making mistakes.
That first part comes all by itself The second part... that's where all the fun is, isn't it?

I like being inspired by the work of others, but it's really my own photos that I can control. My main focus is avoiding the slippery slope of letting the works of others define what my goals are. I want to be as unique in my work as I am in my person. An outpouring of personality like any other good art. Its not my job, the product doesn't often have to be enjoyable to anyone but me (I don't mean that in a selfish way, just a good practice for personal hobbies).

Hi from out of the blue! For what it's worth my experience is that you just let other people influence you - even try to imitate them - but then you move on to the next influence - in ghe end you are the unique blend of all the influences you have absorbed
