The mortal danger of selfies

This chart shows how people died world-wide between December 2013 and January 2017 while taking selfies. According to another study, India is by far the most dangerous country for selfie-deaths, accounting for more than half of the total.

I'm sure many other photographers have died attempting to get "that perfect shot".

Photography is not a benign hobby!

Selfie's are self-focused and inherently dangerous for that reason alone. Ha ha.

I've done a couple of selfies with my wife in exotic places. Not so easy with the K-1 at arms length!

I don't do selfies but I get how some attempts can go terribly wrong, but how on earth can drowning be number one?

Because they were in the water and not on the earth

A whopping 132 in 4 years. That's very safe. About 360,000 people drown per year. A selfie seems like it saves lives.

Well I suspect drowning by accident is a little difficult on dry land, but I acctually expected more people falling from a cliff than drowning because it's simply easier to handle a mobilephone on a mountain than in the water

People expect other people to watch out for them whilst doing stupid things. Why its just a few less in the gene pool and not really missed

Some people take glee in the deaths of strangers. I suspect more photographers died from "respectable" landscapes:

Accidental encounters with wild animals. Sometimes, the human and bear/moose/snake are both surprised, with bad results for the human.

Stupid encounters with wild animals. Sometimes people see the animal and approach too close.

Falls.

Medical emergencies such as heart attacks when too far from help.

Lightning.

Fallen trees.

Fallen rocks.

Forest fires.

Frostbite.

Heatstroke.

Car crashes traveling to or from the destination. That's probably the leading photography-related cause of death.
