Mirror zoom ?
To be fair, a lot of people use the term "zoom" to refer to a tele lens. Without being anal, I try to use the correct term, and often get "deer-in-headlights" look from people.

I was thinking about that too. But a zoom lens has different focal lengths, where usually a Telephoto lens does not. Right?

Just like people who call the thing under the hood of their car a "motor".

It isn't a motor, it is an engine.

Big difference.

A motor uses energy from an outside source, i.e. electricity, air, water or hydraulic fluid under pressure to produce motion and do work.

An engine converts a fuel, i.e. gasoline, diesel, propane, etc. into heat, and converts that into motion to do work.

A motor is nothing without an engine, as the engine can turn a pump or generator to operate a motor, but the engine doesn't need a motor to do work.

Another example (and one I have come across quite often): referring to something electrical that has gone wrong and stopped as having a "short circuit" because they have no idea what the fault is, and probably even what the term "short circuit" actually means!

Yes. A "zoom" is a variable focal-length lens that lets you zoom in on the scene.

Technically, "telephoto" refers to a specific design of long-focal-length lens and not just any long lens. In the beginning, long lenses were really long. A 500 mm lens was 500 mm long. The "telephoto" design paired a strong positive front element with a strong negative back element to create a much shorter lens with a much longer focal length.

Or zoom out to get it all in.

People have become so lazy that they cannot be bothered to move closer to, or farther from the subject to compose their photograph. Or even more of a bother, change lenses so they have a focal length that helps create a better composition.

Might as well have one of those point and shoot things with the lens that goes from 2mm to 10,000mm at the press of a button, or by selecting the appropriate icon, i.e. a flower for macro, a bust for portrait, and some stylized mountains for landscape.

Lazy people.

Might as well just whip out the Stoopit Phon.

So how about the "Motor Trend" magazine? ... Lots of featured cars/trucks with "motors" ?
Someone will have to ask them to change their magazine title to "Engine Trend" !

Lousy journalists.

They should.

And someone should give them a grant or something, so they can get rid of all that bothersome advertising. It chaps my hide to wade thought several pages of ads just to read a half page of articles.

Before armed warfare breaks out in this green and pleasant forum, something else that gets my goat is describing a lens as 'telescopic' when they mean telephoto. Even 'spotting scopes', these days, are seldom telescopic.

Then there's noob who assumes that lettering on the UV filter is the spec for the lens.

Either that or Pentax once created a "49mm Hoya lens."
