Local Craigslist has a Pentax ME listed for $475 and Vivitar 283 flash for $110. The ME has a 55mm / 1.8 lens.
I feel almost a little sorry for folks like this. They are grossly ignorant of the value of their stuff and I foresee great disappointment in their future.

Those of you that know me knows that I like the SMC-AF 35-70 lens. I have, shall we say, a "few". But, I'm always on the lookout for a perfect one. Bought one on the 6th that was advertised as "clean, no fungus". Well, it turned up today. There's not only fungus in it to the extent that the interior of the lens looks like there's a vaseline factory in there, but there's liberal fungus spots on the front and rear elements. Added to that, it looks like someone has had a go at taking the lens apart to try to clean it too and put it back together, not too well.

Aaarrgghhhh. It's being returned tomorrow.

Some Ebay descriptions are, shall we say, on the optimistic side. Some others merely display ignorance, not necessarily evil intent. Then again, I'm sure many of us have benefitted from a seller not realising the true worth of what they have for sale.

I agree with that but a lens described as fungus free which is laden with fungus to the extent that the buyer describes it as a vaseline factory might be closer to dishonest rather than optimistic. Or perhaps the buyer is exaggerating the extent of the fungus. But since he’s a board member, I can only assume he’s honest, truthful and a wonderful human being.
The fact that the lens appears to have been opened up suggests that the seller knew about it. Perhaps tried to clean it up, failed and thought he’s pass the lens on to a rube. But of course it may have been a prior owner who opened up the lens. Who knows. I’m admittedly a bit jaded about items that arrive looking significantly than described. Everyone makes mistakes though.

I agree - I was generalising, not commenting on this specific case, which certainly does make it seem that 'Foul play is suspected'.

In the last week I'be had two eBay purchases refunded by the seller. The first was shipped, but the USPS has no record of ever receiving the package. The seller assumes it was stolen and refunded the purchase. He told me if it ever arrives to keep it and just leave a positive review.

The second kind of upsets me. Avery nice Nikkorex F with light meter, cases, Nikkor-S 50mm, original receipts etc. Two days after I paid the seller sends me a message that it had fallen off a shelf and was smashed. So the order was cancelled. I smell some BS that fell off a shelf. Anyway I ended up paying like $40 more for one without all the extras on shopgoodwill...
