Sometimes a long lens and monopod gets in the way when your subject is too close

Professional caught out a little when Fernando Alonso appeared on the pit wall - he was by far the biggest "name" at this event.
Not sure why he didn't switch cameras and I'm not sure the fingers helped the image.
But we've all been caught out with the wrong lens at the wrong time so sympathy with a guy just trying to do his job.

Yep, been there, shooting Red Squirrels at Formby, using a 150 - 450 as you'd probably expect to and the little blighters are running over my feet, just had to stand still and watch

He has another body with a shorter lens, I assume he wanted the close up effect. But a small ball head would have helped.

Its blurry, but it looked to me like it said Nikon on the body in his hands and Olympus on the body on his hip.

It's actually a camera lens on a tripod: 1 monopod and 2 human legs and a white ballhead.

And, why is he wearing a helmet, was he shooting a roller derby or some such?

I believe he is at a race track

and if you have seen video of the wreck at the latest Indy Car race with the car fragmenting and pieces flying through the air

you would understand why he has a helmet

Here is my little 2 tricks (quickly view OR from far) to determine if Canon or Nikon camera :

Nikon: there is a “red plastic line inserts” underneath the trigger. That’s what I look for first.
Canon: the top hump (where internal flash is located) is a little bit higher and more round shape.

On the OP’s picture, we clearly see the red tab under the trigger, between the 2 fingers.

I have been thinking of retrofitting my seldom-used monopod with a ball head. It would make like so much easier.

We also clearly see the typical Nikon prism housing.

It really does. I have a cheapo monopod that stays in the trunk of my car (for use as a walking stick/club, if nothing else). I finally accumulated enough round tuits to upgrade the ball head on my "good" monopod this week, and the cheap ball went straight to the big stick in the car.

I assume it's for headbutting the competition in order to get the shot.
