What system did you get into? What lenses?

In the last three months, I've started shooting with an m42 camera and picked up a Tamron 01bb (24mm), a Tamron 52b (90mm "portrait macro"), a Tokina-made, Vivitar-branded 35mm f2.8, and a Super-Tak 55 f2.

Over the holiday weekend I'm going to try and secure a good copy of the Chinon CE-5. Can't quite justify paying what a good Pentax LX goes for and this seems like about the best 3rd party imitation going.

I bought a K-5II s as my M42 body, along with the following lenses:

2 old zooms, one Vivitar, the other a Montgomery Ward
Super Takumar 55/1.8
S-M-C Takumar 105/2.8
Soligor C/D 35/2
KMZ Helios 44M

and arriving today, a Cosina 55/1.4

Been remarkably free of GAS for the last 6 months and actually very reduced over the last year. However, I did have a look at a Pentax KP recently...hmmmm.

I was clean for a good while, all gone wrong in the last week. A new GR II for a price I couldn't resist and a random ebay find of a Jupiter 180mm f2.8 lens, just as it looked kinda cool!

The GR has now made the nex5 (an earlier purchase) with pancake lens as a compact walkabout camera completely redundant, I should sell it...

My problem is more GBS – Gear Building Syndrome – rather than gear acquisition.

It started when I got involved with macro. Okay, there was some acquisition stuff going on there, I admit.

But then I decided to build my own automated macro rail (see this post), and it turned out pretty well. It also took a bit of time as I had no clue about any of the electronics or programming that were involved in the project.

So now I am at it again, designing and building an automated pano head for taking panoramas. Key in the focal length of your lens and choose whether you want 1, 2, or 3 tiers of images and press go. Big Pano will (I hope) do the rest. Well, that's the plan, anyway. Do I need it? Maybe. Do I want it? Absolutely! And who knows what I might want to build next?

A major advantage to the DIY route is funding. I can "nickel and dime" AggieMom with buying parts a few at a time. It is much easier than just asking for a grand or so for a lens or two.

On reflection, I guess GBS is really just a subset of GAS.

For some people losing the job (and corresponding steady income) may provide some relieve to this disease. Older people (if they secured stable income as government or corporate pension) do not have any hope for remission.

I honestly think I'm trying to acquire all the camera and stereo gear
I wanted but was to poor to afford when I was around 18 years old.

Without eBay this would never have been possible...

Funny you should say that, when I was 18 I wanted (but could not afford) a push-pull zoom in the 30-150 range. One of the first manual Pentax lenses I acquired when I realized that they work just fine on Pentax dSLRs was the K45-125/4. Many lenses have come and gone since then, but I still have the K45-125.

trying to figure out if the weight advantage makes it worth buying the HD DA 55-300mm F4.5-6.3 WR PLM

considering that I have the following telephotos lenses already:

SMC DA * 300mm F4 ED ( IF ) SDM 77 F

HD Pentax-D FA* 70-200mm F2.8 ED DC AW 77 F [ in Japan being repaired ]

HD Pentax-D FA 150-450mm F4.5 - 5.6 ED DC AW 86 F

HD Pentax -DA AF rear converter 1.4 AW

thoughts, opinions, advice and suggestions eagerly being sought

[ I'm also open to monetary contributions to help fund the purchase as well ]

The 55-300 is more versatile than any of the lenses you listed and is lighter too. For general outdoor use in good lighting its a terrific asset, with limited lighting the 70-200 is a better choice. At the longest end when you know you need 300 the 300 has better IQ but its a PITA if you don't NEED 300 IMHO. The 150-450 is an entirely different animal and another class of lens IMHO.

Super Zoom, large, decidedly long-distance, limited light gathering, often requires (or at least benefits strongly) from a tripod/monopod, etc.
