As someone who works in IT I can safely say this isn't how I would do an upgrade. But my industry has a lot more regulation and oversight.

I am curious what the change entailed and why a complete outage rather than some phased upgrade was the approach.

It was not an upgrade. They did a migration from Yahoo's datacenters to AWS. A shutdown is pretty much inevitable due to synchronization needs. I suspect that more than a few non-portable hacks were encountered during the process.

My flickr page is up.

Given how long it takes to move mere terabytes between our crappy servers at work, I hate to think about moving hundreds of petabytes between hosting services, even with the monster servers and networks they must be running.

Still down for me ,despite getting their blog saying everything is up and running. Will just try clearing my cache and see if that helps.

Edit. Hmm...can access it on my iPad mini running iOS 12.3 but not my iPhone 6s also on 12.3 or an older iPad on 9.3.5.Expect I’ll just have to be patient!

I've just logged in with no problem. It's definitely faster than before, and it seems to me that my photos at full screen on Flickr now look closer to the way the originals look on my monitor. I always used to feel there was a slight loss of sharpness and detail before. The minor inconvenience yesterday seems worth it.

Not complaining; it's a good sign they have restored partial functionality. Hoping this is fixed soon:
