Use your Gear randomly

Since I now have over 90 lenses when am I going to use them all? Even deciding which one to put on the camera is a hard decision. So I googled the internet for something to help me and found this:

Random Thing Picker

I put a list of all my lenses in there, and it generates a random choice. That is the lens I will put on my camera. If I do so every day I will end op using all of my lenses eventually. It's first pick was the CZJ DDR Tessar 50mm 2.8

You can also do a lens test game. Shoot things with the same focal range and let us guess what image shoot with what lens.

I think you’ve just given a prime example of a “First World Problem”!

Do you have a use in mind when you buy a lens?

No particular use apart from taking photo's with it. It's more of a collection of lens characteristics.

I don't own nearly as many lenses (only about twenty primes and ten zooms) but I know the angst of picking just one. To liven up my daily commute, I take a camera and lens with me and do some street photography. Not while driving, I hasten to add. I use public transport.

Picking a camera is easy, my Samsung NX1 just rocks for this application. Now I do have three NX mount autococus zooms, but that gets boring. So I use a K mount adapter for it. I have a lot of several prime lenses that can be used for street photography: 8mm fish, 20mm, 28mm, 35mm, 50mm, 85mm, 100mm, 135mm. After some experimenting I tend to take the easy way. That is my SMC Pentax M 28mm f/2.8 - great colors, sharp, easy to pre-focus, just wide enough on a crop body. What's not to like? The problem is that I tend to get the same shots as before.

Picking a lens at random every morning would certainly liven things up a bit. Great idea.

Nahh.... they were all purchased used!

I have also used random number generators to choose the lens of the day. It kind of adds a new challenge for wherever you're going.. you're stuck w/200mm because that was the roll of the dice. I also keep track of when each lens was used last such that none sit on the shelf too long.

Yesterday it gave me the FA 50mm 1.7 yay! (sample in the Bokeh club). Today I am stuck with my very stiff Tokina tele auto 200mm F1:3.5.

I like this approach. Surrendering to randomness now and then is good for art.

Nice to see the Tessar 50/2.8 getting a run. It is a very nice lens.

The nice thing about participating in the Daily In Group is it both encourages people to capture an image a day and encourages many of us to break out those rarely used lenses.

Also known as the nice life problem...

The Random Thing Picker is really useful. You can keep clicking until you agree with it, hehehehe.

interesting

I started out picking lenses, " experienced " and new for specific purposes

fast aperture

wide angle

normal

telephoto

macro

but now I must admit that my small collection has outgrown that with 16 primes and 5 zooms ( all listed in my profile )
