..... tourists throng to this place

and why the government wants to keep them at bay

It seems that many members of the public have a death wish.
One stage of Rally Gb had to be closed this year because spectators would not move from dangerous positions close to the road.
Now a rally car does not have the weight of a train but it will be travelling at speed, it will be on the edge of safety and unpredictable things can occur very quickly.

Dying in the act of taking a selfie seems like the worst non-criminal legacy I can think of.

Does getting stabbed by a tripod spike at Mesa Arch count?

Sometimes I think we should stop legislating Darwin and just let the gene pool clean itself up a bit.

There are also some cases of people destroying artworks while taking selfies, for example (but not an isolated case):

Oops! A Gallery Selfie Gone Wrong Causes $200,000 in Damage. - The New York Times

I was at a concert recently, and although not a lot of selfie takers, but so many phones in the air that you could hardly enjoy the show. Needless to say a lot of folks were not pleased about it.

We just don't know half of what goes on in this world on a day to day basis. "How the Other Half Dies" would be a good title for a book - except it has been written already. And now the more privileged are putting a different slant on it with their desperate attempts to spice up instagram accounts by putting their risky living on display.

I was at a concert this summer where the artist was took evasive action against people taking cell phone video of the show. The ushers worked as spotters using walkie talkies to give the location of offenders to the people controlling the stage lighting. It is something else to see the narrow beam of death seeking out that holder of a phone or pad. Once found, they would simply let them cook for about a bit before moving on to the next one. After about five minutes, the audience got the message and the phones disappeared.
