I remember the first time I visited the Grand Canyon; I had never seen a drop-off like that before and was very aware that the bottom of the canyon was a mile below the rim. I've become more familiar with scampering around cliff edges since then, but I always try to ensure that I have firm and level ground beneath my feet--especially when I'm taking a picture. I also look up from my camera frequently to maintain situational awareness, even more so if there are other people in the area (including my wife staying safely back from any precipices and telling me repeatedly to be careful).

Of course, all of this was in the pre-smartphone era. I think I'd have to be several times as vigilant these days to avoid collisions with those who insist on seeing the world through their screens.
