It's all about phone sensors, apparently.

The phone is the new compact camera. The image sensors have come a long way.
I noticed all the advertisements for phones over this holiday season are promoting them, not as communication, multi-media devices, they are advertised as cameras. Look at the I Phone 11 ad. I have not seen a single advertisement aimed at the general consumer for a dedicated camera. Not from Nikon, Canon, Sony, Fuji, Pentax, or anyone else.

Not an issue, just manufacturing cost saving on a $3500 made in china... that's embarassing. Generally I can believe customers accepting the build quality at the price they pay for cameras. Imagine, the Z7 battery door is held by two bits of plastic and it breaks very easily, prices slowly increased, quality decreased, customer got used to it (like the story of a fog in water not realizing the water slowly gets warmer and warmer to the point the frog can jump out).
You complained about the location... Not the quality, at least that was what confused me.

Digital cameras without a built-in cellphone are a microscopic part of the market for sensors. In 2018, a total of 19 million standalone digital cameras were sold, as far as I know, all of them had only one sensor. The same year 1.46 billion smartphones were sold, and as far as I know, all of them had at least two sensors (I have no idea how dumb phones with cameras were sold, but for this discussion lets assume that one of them were sold for every smartphone with a single sensor, so about 3 billion sensors for devices with phones). Roughly 150 sensors for cameras with phones for every sensor for cameras without a phone. Pixel density on smartphone sensors is much higher than for phoneless cameras, so the more technically challenging product is the smartphone sensor. However, smartphone sensors resemble a commodity product far more than phoneless camera sensors, so lowering cost of production is more important.

What does it all mean? Beats me.
