National Moth Week!

National Moth Week started on 18 July this year. Per Wikipedia:

"National Moth Week (NMW) is a worldwide citizen science project to study and record populations of moths, Lepidopteran insects closely related to butterflies. The annual event is held in the last week of July. It encourages scientists and non-scientists to participate in mostly night-time surveys of moths."

If you're looking for an excuse to get out and take some photos, this is it!

The home page for the event is: National Moth Week | Exploring Nighttime Nature
There is a Flickr page dedicated to NMW: Flickr: The National Moth Week Pool
And there's a Facebook page as well: National Moth Week - Home | Facebook

Here's the first moth I captured on day 1 - some kind of tussock moth:

I agree! Sergy has one of the Devil's spawn Brown Tail Moths in that second picture! Hate them as the hairs from them and especially their caterpillars causes huge skin and breathing reactions. If I am wrong on the ID, I apologize to the moth. But it looks like what there are thousands of on almost every building here.

Yellow Tiger Moth, found on the front lawn early one day several months ago. Looking through the tiger moth family to identify this I recognised a number of moths I'd previously seen in warmer months. It's mid-winter here, so not too many around just now. Taken with a Ricoh WG-6.

I went out Saturday night with a group of folks to find and document moths in Hong Kong. Got some pretty good photos.

I regularly get Southern old Lady Moths hanging out in the garage every so often, beautiful wings. I seem to prefer moths to butterflies for some reason,
