ND1000 filter recommendation (82mm)

Hi, what are your recommendations of strong ND (ND1000) filters?

Of course, B+W filters would be the best, but they are expensive for occasional use (82mm on DA* 11-18). And there are cheaper or no name filters I am afraid to risk problems with.

What I found the so-so solution might be Hoya ProND1000 filter - reasonable price for reasonable IQ.

I have filters of various brands B+W, Hoya, Kenko, Cokin, I also have some Haida ND1000 or Gobe ND1000X, they are cheaper (not cheap)
but they give very good results, there are also in square format in addition to the screwed one.

I own the Haida 10Stop. One image taken with it and a B&W CPL filter in addition you can see here in my DA*11-18 review. Reviews about this 10stop are very positive if I remember right.

It' clear that on lenses of particular value you can not save on quality, recently I have read, there is a tendency to use fewer filters including UV, as they act as a barrier that could cause more damage than benefits.

Review Haida

Thanks for your reply. According to tests, Haida ND1000 should be worse in flare resistance. What is your experience?

Thanks for your reply. You use it on K-1. When using the filter in APS-C mode, is there also some wigneting when using just one filter at 11mm?

Did a quick test - KP and DA*11-18 and Haida Pro II MC ND3.0 1000x 82mm. No other filter installed.

Near distance shots at f/4.0 and various focal lengths, all images same development in Capture One Pro WITHOUT correcting vignetting. Unsharpness may come from long time exposure while there was a little bit movement by wind - although I wouldn't really call it wind.

18mm

16mm

14mm

12mm

11mm

Hope this helps.

Hi acoufap,

I don't seem to see much vignetting, consider that these extreme focal lengths always suffer from vignetting and flare maybe only 0,5%, even without filter.
I have the 16-35 f/4 Canon and natively suffers from a bit of light fall at the edges at the maximum aperture, then gradually it is recovered by going up both of focal length as well as stopping it down.
Moreover your concern seems to me excessive, the correction is done eventually in post production.

I always shoot in DNG raw format and do the raw conversion in Capture One Pro. Capture One Pro doesn't have auto correction for this lens. As I said NO post processing on vignetting in these images. It's up to you to believe it or not.

I always test what I'm interested in with my lenses. So I know how I can use it in the field. Some of these infos you won't find somewhere else. You can read these things in my review. Main issue here: you can use the DA*11-18 in K-1 FF mode down to 15mm - without hood and you'll find a lot more interesting infos with examples, by example using the lens in K-1 Square Mode and filters.

From APSC area there is a lot of space left until you reach the near FF image circle at all focal lengths. Down from 14 to 11mm it's not FF anymore. So in general image circle is very wide for an APSC lens. So it's also very clear to me that this has positive impact on the vignetting property. Guess it was a must to create a lens that delivers great night sky captures.

I use ZOMEI Ultra Slim filters. Donīt even know if they are really good, but they feel well built, donīt vignette and do the (hobbyists) job.

Hi, Cport,

Sorry for the delay, the question about flare is legitimate, When I bought the first Haida I also read conflicting opinions, it was said that they brought some color dominants,
but as the progress goes on, now they are much improved. Perhaps this article will provide some clarity on the question that was asked.

I bough Sirui's Nano CPL and ND1000 filters on adorama, they had a sale (might still be there). From my limited experience with them, they seem very well made and only cost me around $20 each.

I know Sirui especially for the excellent Tripods, but also produces excellent filters like Lee, Hoya, Kenko, Haida, B&W etc.
If you want to know more about Sirui, here is the link of a very good graphic specialist, graphic designer and photographer.
