"mflenses.com has expired" ?

This morning when I went to check out mflenses.com, I was greeted with this:

Name: 2020-8 (Aug 18) mflenses.com has expired 7.jpg
Views: 598
Size: 91.0 KB

Are other members here seeing the same thing when you try to get to mflenses.com? The "expired" link leads to a godaddy.com page.

Does this simply mean the owners of mflenses.com haven't paid their bills? I know little about the nuts and bolts of the internet, so I thought I'd post this and hope that others might enlighten me about what might be happening to mflenses.com.

I have to confess I've never heard of the website, but they also have some social media pages that haven't had new posts for a long time.

.
I've created 3 websites since 1999. I've also bought and sold dozens of domain names.

10 to 20 years ago, there were not a lot of websites. Back then, most of us made serious money on our websites with Google Adsense, and Amazon affiliate links. 5 - 10 years ago that all changed. Now it's extremely difficult to make a living with Google ads and affiliate links.

So, websites and domains are not worth what they used to be. A website can't count on making much from ads and affilate links. In fact, most websites these days don't make enough money to even pay for their hosting fees (let alone any computer programming expenses that are incurred for site development/imrpovement).

Just last week I chose not to renew 5 or 6 domains, because I could not sell them for anything. I couldn't believe that I couldn't find anyone to buy www.unpluggedmovies.com !

You want to buy MFLenses.com, go for it. But I'd ask, how do you intend to monetize it? By selling lenses? Don't think so, Ebay and the blogs already got that wrapped up. How about selling subscriptions to the MFLenses.com content? Where you going to get the content, and what makes you think you can charge for it given you can already get all the free content you need on MF lenses on Internet.

But, if you still want it, go for it, I'd love to see you make lots of money and prove me wrong (but I doubt it).

Hopefully this is just an administrative error... Although I haven't visited for a while, it's a very useful site and one of the few forums I'm actually registered with

I don't think the OP was intending to buy the domain, but was instead concerned that the registration has expired, since it's a really valuable resource for many of us, and more of an enthusiast site rather than a commercial enterprise (although the owner does, if I remember correctly, sell on some of his collection from time-to-time)...

It's looks to me like this domain has been "abandoned" and may be for sale. It will only cost you $69.95 to hire GoDaddy to try and buy it for you. However, I'm not going to buy it that's for sure.

mflenses.com doesn't have a lot of activity, but it's a treasure trove for lovers of old lenses!

No, actually I'm just a fan of the site and was wondering why it's down.

Yes, exactly. Thank you, BMC, and well said.

Thanks for the heads up. I refer to the site fairly regularly, and would be disappointed if it has disappeared.

I guess the historical entries could be accessed through Archive.org.

You're welcome. I also visit the site regularly and was there just last night. Nothing seemed out of the ordinary.

A couple months ago, Attila, the site administrator, mentioned he was looking for ways to enhance site revenue. But there was no suggestion the site might cease operating.

As BigMackCam suggested, this is probably just an administrative lapse which will soon be corrected.
I hope!

Yep, back for me too Thank goodness for that... Aside from PentaxForums, it's one of the few websites and communities I'd really hate to see disappear...

I've seen other websites just go down recently.

I guess google ("I guess it's ok to be evil") and amazon finally starved them to death.
