It's not clear how the lens got so badly damaged that way. One of the dings was caused by a blow that hit the threaded side of the rim, which bent it outwards. How can that be? My guess is that a previous owner wasn't satisfied with the lens performance and tried to fix it with a hammer.

This tool looks really useful. Great job!

I did... unspeakable things to a dented Nikon 85mm 1.8D filter ring to get it to accept a filter
