A very specific bag requirement.

Yes, another "Which bag should I buy?" thread. But for this one I have very specific requirements.

I am looking for a backpack or preferably a sling-pack that can accommodate my standard street/walk-around kit:
  • DFA* 70-200
  • DFA 15-30
  • DFA* 50
  • K1, ideally with one of the above lenses mounted.
If it could also hold the DFA 28-105, that would be an advantage.

I currently use a Lowepro 202AW, but that only holds the basic kit if no lens is mounted on the camera, and even then, the DFA* 50 has to go in the top compartment meant for non-photo gear.

Everything goes nicely in my Vanguard Up-rise II 38 messenger bag. That bag is perfect for taking gear to a fixed location, but I don't like messenger bags for walk-around, particularly if using a sling strap for the camera/lens.

So, something as compact as possible for this kit, and accessible without taking it completely off your back. All suggestions welcome.

P.S. I have a Peak Design camera clip, but find it unwieldy for the K1. It's more suitable for an APS-C camera for me.

Think Tank Street Walker Pro is a great backpack that should meet your needs. I have a similar set up with mine except I have the DFA 150-450 instead of the 70-200.

You don't need a bag, you need an assistant

For the past year I've been using the Lowepro Passport Sling III. It would probably hold the gear you listed even if a bit tight, plus space for a couple of spare batteries, a small case for SD's, and a lens blower. As much as I use it it has held up really well.

BUT...

I should be receiving the Top Shelf camera bag in just a few more weeks which I'm hopeful will be an even better fit for my gear, and would appear very capable of holding yours. Having a solid surface for changing lenses will be a godsend. Granted it's not particularly inexpensive, but not really over-priced either.

Unfortunately, the wife is more than happy to send me on my way unaccompanied. In any case, weight is not an issue, just organisation.

Yes, I saw the Top Shelf online a while ago. It looks very interesting, though pretty expensive. I hope it works for you.

Is there a difference between the Street Walker and the Street Walker Pro? They look identical to me, besides a slight price difference.

Size. The Street Walker is the smallest, then the Pro, then the Hard Drive.

I like to use a normal hiking backpack with inserts. It doesn't scream expensive photography equipment inside.

I use a Canon 200 EG backpack. It'll handle your list.

Have you tried the Lowepro Flipside 300 AW? I think it can hold all of what you want to carry.

Hi Paul,

I have had the Think Tank Street Walker Pro for a couple of years to usually house my K1, 150-450, 540 flash, pair of binoculars and occasionally a 24-70 as well. I really like this pack as it is very sturdy with strong straps & zips and is comfortable when full (~10kgs). It looks like normal backpack. I have taken it fully loaded on flights interstate a couple of times and it performed well.

I did a minor re-structure of the pack to show you how much room you might have for your gear. In the photo below is the 70-200 on the K1, the DFA 50, a DFA85 (slightly smaller than your 15-30), the AF540flash and easily enough space for the 28-105 and possibly more if organised properly. It has numerous, well designed pockets and pouches as well. I believe it will accommodate your gear easily (and might be a bit too big?)

PM me if you want to have chat about it.

Geoff

I have a somewhat larger Tenba bag of similar design. Very useful for travel, but not so convenient for access. Looks good though.

My Peak Design Everyday Messenger, and Domke Metro Messenger, both comfortably accommodate exactly that kit.

The PD looks snappier, and is a little more compact.
