Flexing of the shutter blades was a big problem with shutters in early cameras, dividing the shutter up into three segments allows for movement that would be damaging for a single sheet of material. Titanium was used in some upper tier cameras but it was still a rarity in the past due to the difficulty of fabricating and machining it. Light Composite materials such as Carbon fiber and Kevlar are much more common now.
