Cos that ALWAYS works

Prior to buying new gear, I always have in mind something that I will do with said gear.

Looking back, I er, sometimes failed to do what I intended with the last purchase [Reasons] and that can act as a effective brake.

Is camera / lens GAS in DSM IV? If not , don't worry about it, just buy what you want. Try to convince your boss for pay raise, if he is a photographer you'll have more chance to get it.

So true! There are literally thousands of ways to great bokeh and probably just as many solutions that offer amazing optical performance for what is in focus. In my hands and for my creative intent, will a new D FA* 85/1.4 blow away either of my Tamron 90/2.8 (72B) or (coming in the mail) Tamron 90/2.5 (52B)? Probably not. OTOH, there is the matter that despite already owning the Tamron 90/2.8 (72B) there is the 52B coming in the mail.

or will the D FA* 85/1.4 blow away the old SMC A* 85mm/1.4? of the Zeiss Planar 85/1.4 (which is for sale, btw)?

As long as GAS is not eating into the budget for beer, it's all OK.

"Photography" as a hobby can be anything you want it to be. That means that learning about different bits of gear, trying out different lenses, or rescuing old equipment from the dustbin is just as valid as going out and taking pictures.

I know people with RVs and old sports cars that spend insane amounts of money and time on upkeep for each short hour of use of their toys. Boats are even worse. And then there's cocaine! So it could be worse.

Enjoy your gear!

Love it! I bet it'll be in DSM VI whenever it comes out.

I will still buy things, just got the DFA 70-210.
Until now I managed to not buy that one, although I've been pretty close to click "buy" more than once. Every time I've been protected, it was like the voice of an angel behind my shoulder whispering "no you already have the D-FA*70-200, isn't that enough?" .
