have you been to Yellowstone before ?

hiring a guide is a good idea to get an idea of what is going on at the park so you know what to look for on your own

we have done that each time we have gone

what type of vehicle are you renting ? I recommend an SUV

what type of pass will you have ?

Entrance Passes (U.S. National Park Service)

you don't want to pay each time you go into the park

make sure you check out the information available on the web and elsewhere about Yellowstone and how to get around

you might want to take a look at this book

personally I don't use a fish eye so that is the one I would leave at home

which wide angle is similar to the Ricoh ?
This will be my first trip to Yellowstone and Grand Teton. We will be with our guide on our first full day so we are hoping to glean as much useful information as we can from him that we will be able to use during the balance of our stay.

We will be hoping to get SUV although we don't have any plans to drive to far off the beaten path.

I have a NP Lifetime Senior Pass which I obtained a couple of years ago when I visited Joshua Tree NP. It will admit me and any occupants of my vehicle.

We are very much looking forward to the trip. Hope you all have a great time as well.

Yellowstone has a two lane black top road

Park Roads - Yellowstone National Park (U.S. National Park Service)

designated pull off/parking is fine for vehicles

SUV may allow you to pull off in other areas but if marked " off limits " you cannot park and you are suppose to be completely off the road and not blocking it at all if you pull off where not prohibited - ask your guide

beware of fire danger because of vegetation under your vehicle

63 air miles north to south (102 km)
54 air miles east to west (87 km)

Highest Point: 11,358 feet (3,462 m; Eagle Peak)
Lowest Point: 5,282 feet (1,610 m; Reese Creek)
Larger than Rhode Island and Delaware combined
About 5% covered by water; 15% by grassland; and 80% by forests

However you can choose to park and choose to walk through the " ungroomed " areas,

if so, be careful, it isn't just " a walk in the park "

the terrain can be rough and unforgiven, the wildlife are not pets and can get nervous and reactive

but it is amazing what you can experience

we will be on our second day of our trip to the Gran Tetons and Yellowstone National Park

I'm getting the photography gear together and putting it into the big pack -

still have plenty of time to decide on what to take

Pentax Cameras, K-3 III, K-3 II, Pentax LX

Of those lenses only these really make any sense to use with the HD DA 1.4x. Also on the LX (and I'm sure you know this) the converter will vignette. It still may be worth using with the D FA 100 (it appears this is not the WR version so it does have an aperture ring based on your nomenclature in this post). Using it with the DFA 100 gives larger than 1:1 and also a nice f4 140mm prime if you should want that.

Have a good trip. I'm envious as this was the plan I had earlier in the year but the wildfires out that way killed my plans.

yes, no plans on using the converter with the LX

and the D FA 100mm is the older non WR version with the aperture ring

Depending on where the gear is if you take a short hike and leave the long zoom behind you can use the converter with these lenses I suppose.

The 50 becomes an F 1.7 70mm which seems too redundant with the 77. The 77 becomes a 108mm f2.5 which is rather redundant with the 100 macro but if you need to the option is there. Some people have reported success with the 300 plm and that teleconverter but it is again rather redundant with the 150-450 as a 77-420 f6.3-8.8. Still having these options is good redundancy in case of failure.

I hope you have a great time there. With any luck, there might be some snow dusting.

Steve
Could be, it did snow heavily on my last visit in mid May of 2018 as I drove north from Norris to Mammoth

We’ve been out here since Saturday and will leave be leaving this coming Saturday. The smoke/haze doesn’t become a factor until the afternoon.
I’ve been exclusively using the K-3 III with the 150-450 and the HD1.4x converter, the K-3 and the 60-250 and the K1 II with the FA* 24-70. No plans to change that. Most shots by far with the K-1 II and FA* 24-70.

You are covering from 24-1000mm effective field of view on 35mm film - impressive for a 3 camera/3 lens set weighing what it does. Does the improved ISO on the K3iii make the f6.3-7.8 DFA 150-450 + 1.4x a non-issue or is that f7.8 at roughly 950mm field of view still difficult to get enough shutter speed balanced against ISO?

My less ambitious plan had been to take a 20mp m43 Panasonic GX8 with a rented 50-200 Pan Leica and a 2x Panasonic Teleconverter making the effective focal length 50-200 f2.8-5.6 and 200-800 f5.6-f8 w/2x but the ISO performance of that camera is much much worse than the K3iii so I would assume it has been no problem at all where I was concerned I might struggle a bit. I also considered taking my KP and renting the DFA 150-450 and using my HD DA 1.4x.

as expected, my rental 20-40mm zoom limited arrived early from LensRental.com, I just picked it up from my local Fed EX

well packed with a protective oversized " LensRental " plastic case in which the lens, enclosed in "LensRental " waist pack, is located, there is a XS-prodigitalB+W filter screwed into the back of the len's small hood.

original caps front and rear

no pouch

I cannot remove the filter - cross threaded perhaps - one call to LensRental and they are shipping me rush another set up and I will send this one back
