I see this will not be possible with the Nikon.
It's not possible to use M mode with AutoISO? It is with my Nikon 1 V1 (different "beast", I know, but still.. )

As with Pentax dSLRs, top-shelf Nikon dSLRs treat M mode as true manual with no auto-ISO (i.e. not as TAv).

Well the excuse for Pentaxes not having AutoISO in M is that we have TAv in the first place, right?

I do use bounce flash when I absolutely have to but I prefer available light and good subject isolation, so the D750 and 50mm 1.8G really is all I needed. I think that combo lightly used set me back $700, the other lenses I bought just to round out the other focal lengths for when I shoot wide or tele, and getting outside with the 105mm 2.5 dishes out amazing portraits if I can get the subject to hold still enough for me to manual focus!

Here's the very first shot I took with the D750 and 50mm 1.8G. I am certain me and the K-3 would have missed this moment:

The 105mm:

The 28-80mm 3.3-5.6

The 80-200 4.5-5.6D:

And all of these were shot wide open

What about you and a K-3iii and the DFA 50* 1.4? Or even the DA 50 1.8?

Statements like this always make me wonder.

That's way more money lol I spent $700 not $3000 and I probably would have missed it with that expensive combo since it is crop sensor and wouldn't have had room to scoot back to get the shot. I do not miss having a crop sensor with 50mm lens indoors. The Pentax DA 50mm 1.8 I had was very hit or miss with its autofocus accuracy. I owned it and replaced it with the Pentax FA 50mm 1.4 which I loved and maybe would have been great on a K-1 but I decided I was done waiting around for a decent K-1 deal and it was more cost effective to switch systems.

I listed quite a few shortcomings of the Nikon system I have encountered. One less obvious one is Nikon users seem to not treat their gear as well as Pentax users. I had to send a few lenses back when trying to fill up my bag again because they were either flat out not functioning properly or in rougher condition than the photos of their listings. And since many pros use Nikon a lot of the camera bodies for sale are sporting 200-500k shutter actuations so its hard to find a lightly used one

Also older manual focus Nikon's seem to have grease that hardens with age, whereas my old Takumars, K, M, A lenses were all buttery smooth after all those years

Got it. I shoot 50mm wide open on my K1 for the same kind of shots. I had issues with wide open focus precision on my DA50 f1.8 as well and usually went for the FA50 1.4 instead, now I have a DFA*50. Keep in mind that DA50 is half the price of even the budget nikkor 50mm 1.8G you are using. On a K3 50mm is a bit tight for indoors candids in my opinion and a 35mm would have been more similar to your D750 with a 50mm. You've got a nice setup there, though I think you'll find lots of people making similar shots on their Pentax gear, even old apsc bodies. As long as you're happy and getting the shots you want, good for you.

No, it is a matter of definition, not excuse. M mode means manual exposure based on an external meter reading or the internal meter using the viewfinder EV scale or some other approach (elg. Lunny 11 for moon shots). True manual is also extremely helpful for balancing flash, say for HSS or with on-camera controllers, say for Godox multiple flash setups.

FWIW, I do a large amount of my shooting in M mode, including all of my posts to Flickr in the last 18 months.

I did have the Pentax FA 35mm f2 for a while. I found it had erratic focus precision too which kind of ruined an important family photo shoot I had and which was basically the turning point to start from scratch. But even then, I didn't really love that focal length and find 50mm to be a good sweet spot for me. I'd like an 85mm f1.4 on full frame but then it'd be cramped indoors all over again haha

I would have bought a used A7iii with a cheap (even better 2nd hand) Samyang 45/1.8 and 75/1.8 and kept the Pentax stuff.
The Pentax lenses will also work on the A7iii with an adapter. (better MF too)

The problem with Nikon D750 is that its a system that will just get less and less support over time.

I know we have some guys who switched to Nikon then switched back. It would be great if they chimed in. We're getting half the story.

I shoot Nikon (I have a Z9 on order) alongside my Leica and Pentax cameras. Each camera has its advantages and pitfalls, for me no one system can truly do it all.

Why other manufacturers haven't caught on with this is beyond me, just like the bulb mode long shutter speeds. I use TAv mode when there is a lot going on and I don't have time to tweak exposure like I usually do.
