Thanks for sharing. I've read the background of a lot of professional portrait photographers, and it often starts when they become parents.
I don't know whether the same thing happens with dogs.
I know having acquired a puppy who's just coming up on a year old, and turns heads wherever she goes.
I didn't get her for her looks, but if other dog owners and non-owners all compliment my family on our dog, I guess I should photograph her.
It's actually quite weird, being just the human on the end of the lead, but the dog is the one everyone wants to know.
I've even had people define me as 'the person with the really cute dog'. I don't know if anyone else gets that?
I've been thinking about how to do justice to her photographically, and this is just the kind of inspiration I need.

Funny, one of my parents was public figure, the other was really well know just not as much so. I went from being Wilson's kid, or Phylis's kid, to being Simon and Robyn's father. There wasn't a lot of me time in between.

Wonderful post. I do a lot of dog park photography as well as photographing my own dog, Bandit. I’m recovering from a ruptured patella tendon but as soon as I’m outdoor mobile again I’ll take inspiration from this thread and put it into practice.

For us dog park type shooters it certainly helps break us out of the box.

We had an Italian Greyhound until this summer, and that's what it was like. People would stop their cars to ask me what kind of dog he was. Among his breed he was pretty normal, but they are unusual-looking dogs. The replacement dog is a mutt, great dog but not unusual. Now people stop me and tell me they miss the old dog.
