I'm a massive LOTR fan/nerd, but I think it is worth pointing out that the One Ring (and dare I say the whole narrative) is a fantasy. As is the belief that one lens can do everything

But in reality if I was to just have one lens the HD DFA 50mm 1.4 would be the one lens to rule them all.

There's only one true Ring and it ain't the one by Tolkein.

As for lenses, any good quality 35mm on full frame or 24mm on APS-C is all you need. For most of the 1990s the only camera I used was an Olympus XA with its fixed 35mm, and I took some of the best shots of my life with it.

I'm not a fan of zooms as I spend too much time "zooming" around. I usually carry two small primes in my pockets, plus one on the camera.

If I had to choose only one, I would choose my old green ring DA 21mm Ltd. on the KP. Here are a couple examples shot with the 21 from a series I've been working on called "We are so Small."

Yep I think I could live with just my SMC 21mm Ltd too. It is a very forgiving lens, and the focal length is very versatile.

Not “do everything” best walkabout option is what I think is being asked. The 18-135 is a compromise over seriously long ranges like the 18-300’s and such.

Primes are great too - but not as good at many things. Jack of all trades master of none applies but so does good enough.

As a prime the DA 35 (either version - but the macro adds a capability at the expense of focusing speed and optical speed) and DA 21 are good choices but I’d almost always rather have the 20-40 with me.

I just noticed that there is a Tamron Di II AF 18-250mm f/3.5-6.3 on sale at about USD100 in my valley. I have always been against suspicious about superzooms. The reviews on this site seem to fall into either "love it" or "hate it" but overall it seems to be better than most lenses in this category. As buying lenses have lately become more about scratching itches than meeting actual needs, I will pass on this one. For now.

One lens that I tried and found a little wanting is the Samyang 85mm f/1.4. It is a fine lens but the focal length is just a bit too long for general use (especially on crop frame). Still, when the photo opportunity arises it can deliver.
