Cokin filters

Im on market for normal contrast filters for black and white... i have a good number of lens sizes to deal with, and am wondering if the Cokin system is the better way to go considering it can grow.

But i am wondering on the cokin black and white filter contrasts, they give almost no clue on

light transmission
strength of the filter.. ie light orange, medium orange, or heavy orange... etc.

The red, green and blue filters for monochrome probably conform to some standard. e.g. cutting light by two or three stops.

I have an old set of Cokin A filters somewhere which had filter coefficients (factors) listed for each filter. This was common practice and I have many screw in filters from other brands which also carry the filter factor. Yellow would be about 1.5 and orange/red about 3 from memory. I expect the current Cokin filters will also be labelled individually. It might be worthwhile to look for used sets, I suspect many will be like mine - rarely used and in good condition.

The coefficients and color correction equivalents (e.g. 80A, 82B) for the early A series are listed in the Cokin literature. Later releases have the coefficient printed on the filter.

Blue colour conversion filter example:
Cokin: A20, A21, A22
Coeff: ×4,×3,×2
Equiv:80,80A,80B

Page 46 of the below brochures lists the filter factors (coefficients) and f-stop adjustment

Or, get filters that fit your biggest lens diameter, and use step-up rings to use with your other lenses. Should generally be fine, except perhaps for some wide angle lenses where you might get vignetting.

Cokin has orange filters equivalent to 85A,B and C.

To cover the 96mm you'd need the 100 × 100mm Z-Pro series. The filters each will run about $45-54 USD, the adapter rings $30-45 USD each and the holder $50-70 USD. The Aluminum holder will run you about $190 USD. It looks like they don't make a lens hood for the Z-pro series.

So you could be looking for at least a $365 investment for Cokin equipment.

The P series is 84 × 84mm.

The density of the filters is given on the Coking website (cokin.com).

Yellow - P001 - 2/3 f-stops
Orange - P002 - 2/3 f-stops
Red - P003 - 3-1/3 f-stops (the "-" is a minus)
Green - P004 - 2-2/3 f-stops

The OP could simplify things, and save a LOT of money by getting a REVORING 67mm filter adapter, $35. Then get one screw-on 67mm orange to cover the entire 46-62mm filter range, and obviously 67 too. There are three others, all the way up to a 95mm adapter for the 82-95 range. These are what I use and they work well.

Available at B&H.

Is the Sigma 95 or 96mm? I couldn't find any Sigma lenses with a 96mm filter diameter. Equally as difficult to find are 96mm circular filters although they do exist and Cokin makes a 96mm adapter ring for the Z-pro (L) holder.

There are cheap 'equivalents' to Cokin filters, the hardware for which ftt genuine Cokin. You could try a set of those, see how you get on, before making any major expenditure. I have a mixture of both Cokin and 'cheaper', and I can tell no difference in use.

It won't appear in a photo. But you can't use a lens hood of course, nor can you with the Cokin or similar ones.

There are in fact clip-on lens hoods for the Cokin filter holders.

I have been unable to find a hood for the Z-pro (L) holder on either the Cokin website or the major photo etailers like Adorama or B&H other than the bellows one:
