Isn’t this about a destroyer in the arctic that launches a torpedo attack against a sub, and the captain in an argument says something like “they will fire one when I say fire one,” and the weapons officer responds “one away”

American navy doing something wrong, it must be a work of fiction.

Ok, Sidney Poitier seems to be using at least three bodies, two Nikons (Nikon F and Nikon F Photomic one may be a Nikomat) and indeed a Pentax Spotmatic:
One of the first instances of 'jumping ship'?

This one has been on my list of 'movies to watch' for a while.

Fun Fact of the day

The Bedford Incident (I think the first film role by Donald Sutherland...), Fail Safe, and Doctor Strangelove I believe were all released within months of each other. Each is terrific. Also from 1965 is "the Spy Who Came In From The Cold", another cold war classic, and "The Ipcress File" ! There's a weekend of film viewing for you!

And to be totally geeky about it, the Pentax isn't a Spotmatic, as there's no meter switch. It would have to be one of the S models, and it may even have the more prominent self timer ring below the rewind knob. But that may just be a trick of the light!

Just like they really shot down TWA007 over the Atlantic coast. Are we really to believe a 747 blew up on its own due to an overheated centre body fuel tank

The US Navy not using Beseler Topcon Super D'? I can see Poitier using a Nikon if he's a civilian...

He is a civilian in the movie, working for an unnamed magazine.

Some more screen caps

You can see all 3 cameras in this shot, though the Pentax is slung over his shoulder and partially obscured

You can almost make out "Asahi PENTAX". The self-timer under the rewind knob would seem to identify this as a SV (H3v).

Anyone want to guess what lens and f-stop?

You can clearly make out "Nikon" here.

My impression is that the Pentax gets less screen time than either of the Nikons individually. It might seem unusual to have competing products on screen but as I recall this was still an era without complicated legal maneuvering have products on-screen. Indeed the product makers would often write the studios a check as a thank-you for the free advertising.

Sure you're not thinking of "Ice Station Zebra"? Similar themes: Cold War, submarine, Arctic setting, etc. There was a "double agent" in the story.

Note: Unless anyone objects I'm going to merge this thread into the "Pentax in The Movies" thread.

When this film was made the audience was not camera brand-conscious.
Pentax, Nikon, Leica or what have you, it was all the same.
They knew only that this style of camera was for professionals.

Most viewers were probably using a Kodak camera - if they owned a camera at all.
35mm SLR cameras didn't become a consumer item until the second half of the 1970's.
