Photographers Rights and Photography Restrictions

this thread is NOTmeant to be a discussion thread, (we have enough of those already) but a place where people can post links to sites with factual summaries of laws pertaining to photography, or speficic places and photography restictions.

Each post should have a title, COUNTRY - City - Place

I will make the first two postings as an example.

New York's photography permit rules.

The announcement of the final rule... an excerpt...

QuoteQuote:
When a Permit Is Not Required

A permit is not required for filming that uses hand-held cameras or tripods and does not assert exclusive use of City property. Standing on a street, walkway of a bridge, sidewalk, or other pedestrian passageway while using a hand-held device and not otherwise asserting exclusive use of City property is not an activity that requires a permit. ...
The full rule is available at NYC's MOTFB Permit Rules (Final)

Also, here is a link to the only section of the NY Metro Transit Authority (MTA (aka the subway)) rules (Section 1050.9 para C) mentioning photography...

http://www.mta.info/nyct/rules/rules.htm#restricted

Basically, photography is OK as long as you don't trespass and don't use equipment that gets in the way of other passengers.

AMTRAK's current photography rules (as of approx April 2009)...

Amtrak Corporate Guidelines on Photography and Video Recording

Please note, there are restrictions only of WHERE you may take photographs from but not WHAT you may photograph. Basically, you cannot shoot while on or in "restricted areas." (ticketed passenger may shoot on platforms or on trains). However, there is nothing saying you cannot take photos OF those areas from public property or within publically accessable portions of Amtrak property.

general articles on laws and rights - links to photo magazines

I will keep looking for articles in photo magazines about laws and rights, Note these are intended to specifically avoid articles about photographers being arrested as this is meant to be an information thread not a discussion thread

US - photo rights, copyright and releases

When I was researching legal issues about releases and copyrights prior to my recent exhibition, I found this very helpful site:

Photography Business Topics

Look at the vertical menu on the left side of the page. Pick a topic of interest; he usually covers it thoroughly and thoughtfully.

I always have a copy of an article detailing photographers' rights in the UK in my camera bag - I see a new version has now been written and is available here:
