The horses off Dülmen.
Lens: Pentax FA*85mm/f1.4 Camera: Pentax K-01

In the German place Dülmen there is a herd off wild horses where every year the yearling stallions are catched and removed from the herd. The entry off the herd in the arena is every year very different and this one off 2010 is very special. The arena is shaped in a horse shoe and there are 25.000 spectators for this wonderfull event.

With the K-7 and DA*50-135mm lens.

Well there are made some changes in the catching over the past years. This because there where some protests from groups concerned with the health and welbeing off the horses. There was a study about it by a German University and out of it came that this was still the least stressfull method to separate the yearling stallions (who are going to make trouble in the next year) from the herd. The other solution to catch them over the year would mean more stressfull moments while that is now just for one day that the herd is going into the arena for a few hours. Stress is there, but you also see rest in the older mare's who come into the arena for years and know that they are not the catch. This scene is from the entry, so there is a lot off dynamic in the herd.

Nominated, though I'm shocked that this wasn't a sports photo. Nonetheless, you do great work regardless of the subject and as a fellow sports photographer I feel honor bound to vote for you.

I nominate this photo.

The subject matter is of course amazing.
I like the cropping and chosen aspect ratio, which deliver the sense of a wide arena and emphasize the layers - grass, horses, people.
The horses are sharp and contrasty while the people are hazy, which positively contribute to a sense of depth (which can sometimes be lost to telephoto compression).
I also like the repeating patterns of horse heads and human heads. This contributes to a pleasant uncluttered look despite the large amount of detail in the photo.
