I nominate this photo. Any photo that gives me an instant knot in my stomach just by looking at it deserves a nomination for it's innate power.

What is her name? Why is she so sad?

I nominate this photo. Love the texture of her face. I don't get sad from her expression. I get sternness from a life lived long. She sees a lot.

Thanks for the kind words, everyone!

I do not know her name nor do I know the history behind the texture in her face. She seemed like a woman that endured much at great cost.

....and still she soldiered on.

I love the lines and the aching sadness but still she puts on her lipstick to face the new day.

NOMINATED!

Not the kind of photo I would take, but a very powerful image. Well done, I nominate this photo.

Thank you both! Yes, I was drawn to the lipstick as well. It's features like that which make me wonder what was she like 30, 40, 50, or 60 years ago. Her skin was smooth once. I bet her eyes were softer. What was she like? Was she an airline stewardess during the golden age of flight? Or was she one of the first women scientists at a research institute? I enjoy speaking to the senior generation and I admire their features. Every line and wrinkle is a badge of honor earned through experience and each one of them is story waiting to be told.

Her face reminds me of WWI nurses I saw when I was young. Nursing on the western front must have been tough.
