This photo was taken in July of 2012 while climbing
Blanca Peak (14,345 feet), the fourth highest peak in Colorado. The city lights in the background are from Alamosa, Colorado.
The night before our summit bid we camped at Blue Lakes around 12,000 feet elevation. As the sun begin to fade I set up my camera on the tripod and began to take a few shots of our camp. My friend Sam went into her tent with her head lamp on and I loved the way the orange tent glowed in the foreground. As if became full dark I did a longer exposure which gave me time to run around to each tent and shine my head lamp under the rain flys one at a time. That was fairly crude, but it looked neat on the LCD and my hiking companions loved it. After that we did several more attempts with each person lighting up their own tent. It took quite a bit of trial and error as our head lamps varied in brightness and the tents varied in distance from the camera. The final image was a four minute exposure, but the lights were on anywhere from a minute and a half up to three minutes to try to obtain uniform brightness.
If you look very closely you can find me in the picture as I shine the light under the edge of my tent. The entire process took about an hour. In Lightroom I worked to even out the brightness of the tents a little more. If I had it to do over again I would have made sure everyone kept their lights moving to avoid hot spots and light up each tent more uniformly.
