Mule Train on the North Kaibab Trail for K-3 photo contest. This photograph was taken from the back of a mule at the exact spot (within inches) as the cover photo on National Geographic magazine of July 1978 (Vol. 154, No. 1). I planned the picture -- using a contour map -- well in advance of my mule ride to capture the same view that I had seen years ago during my first subscription to National Geographic. My son, wearing a yellow cap, rides ahead of me on a mule named Dagwood. I had stopped my mule for minute to compose the shot, and had just enough time to snap the picture before the mule started trotting to catch up with the others.
