I do not have a particular philosophy about photography. What I find most challenging is to make a picture that is self-expressive. One where the viewer can hear my voice. I believe that I have been able to do that with this shot. "Vast emptiness, no essence," to quote an ancient sage, as the shakuhachi rings out into space. Heaven, man and earth refers to the Taiji concept of heaven above, earth below linked by man whose feet are grounded on the earth, and whose head points towards heaven with a mind vast as the sky. The structure is a torei, or gate, symbolic of entering the mystery, passing from sleep to wakefulness. It rests on the earth, is made by man and points towards heaven. Heaven, Man and Earth.
