Early 2014 I had major unexpected surgery and wasn't fit to get out and do much photography for a while. My first solo trip out of the house about six weeks later, I'd intended to catch the late afternoon light on nearby hills, however by the time I got there, the best light was already past, and I wasn't fit enough to walk up the hills anyway.
Desperate to photograph something, at a whim, I parked the car by the nearby cemetery (ironically across the road from the hospital where I had surgery) and decided there was nothing to lose with a bit of experimentation.
The resulting image is a multiple exposure combining faster, sharper exposures with longer slow zoom exposures to create the ghosting effect.
I thought about using darker, grim tones that might be typically associated with a cemetery, however I found the stillness relaxing and the opportunity to be outdoors again after so long, invigorating, so I've gone with the bolder more saturated tones here, as they combine with the ghostly effect to create a juxtaposition of a place of the dead, yet a place where I was very much celebrating being alive.
