Do not turn the focus ring to focus. Macro photography is this way. Turn your focus ring to infinity and up your aperture to at least f8, usually I have to go higher, as in f11 or more. Next move you and the camera back and forth until focus is spot on. Btw, I use spot metering, that's what works for me. Others may use a different metering method. DOF is usually very shallow, and sometimes, near impossible to get the entire object in focus,. On bugs we usually like just the eyes in focus and usually, that's all that is in focus.
