If the last was meant to be a photo of a bee's pollen basket then it's terrific. Also I love your Macro Guide. There's no fancy equipment and you take an honest trial and error approach with helpful examples. I've downloaded for weekend reading. I'm getting a Marumi +5 on Saturday so the timing is great.

No all the pictures were fails , too much magnification , too much wind ..
Mainly too much macro .. Sometimes less is more .

I hope the guide is useful .. I did try to show how affordable / doable macro can be .

I think that all of the macro information you provide is great, and really helpful. A Google search a while back led me to some of your macro bug shots -- which led me to this forum -- which help lay the foundation for my first DSLR (K-50). So, you are inadvertently responsible for me being here -- lol

You sure did it. You got them hooked and now they will be out taking macros.

I use basically the same that old uses. Only I usually use my three closeups when stacked are equal to +7.

But youre right about one thing, old, sometimes more magnification is too much. I tried this year before last. I stacked the closeups on a lens I had that was macro at 80mm, then I stacked on another glass from a lens I took apart, and with all that, there was no DOF, and way too close so much so I couldn't even focus on the subject.
Though I did get this one:

Pre set !

Pre set the camera ...

I set the lens up for what works 90% of the time ..
Then I set ISO , shutter speed , Fstop to work ...
A few test shots before looking for insects to photograph , and away you go ...

Keeping in mind that close up is good here too, remember that sometimes it's all about serendipity.

I found this in the upper quarter of an otherwise meh photo. I didn't even see them when I took the exposure.

I find the more magnification I try to use, the harder it is to get good sharp pictures. This one was a lucky shot I guess, on the one hand I managed to get the rows of eyes to come out, but on the other I could have gotten more depth of field and a sharp[er overall picture with 50mm extension tubes instead of the 75mm used here (135mm Makinon lens)

Same here, Damselfly taken a little earlier with the same setup, the ones taken with 50mm of tubes were sharper overall, but more detail here with 75mm.

Things like the little hairs don't turn out as sharp as they might with a little less magnification. Also I think the 50mm with extension tubes does a better job overall, almost always noticeably sharper results, but I rarely get dragonflies or insects in general to let me get that close. While the 135 lets me get a foot away or more, the 50mm requires within less than 6 inches. Insects usually don't want you that close...but it's great for tiny flowers...

Unfortunately so many factors at play :

Shutter speed , ISO , F-stop , free hand ( movement ) , DOF , how close you are to the ideal focus point , Oh and Lens Quality , yes yes yes High mag shows a lenses weakness ...

Which is why so many capture insects , pop them in the freezer , and then photograph the insect under studio conditions .. ( Not sure that is Fair Chase ) , possibly also then going to stacking ...

Very hard to compete with such techniques if you play by fair chase ...
