Couple of Recent Ones
Posted By: Paleo Pete, 10-06-2014, 05:22 PM

Haven't been doing much macro lately so I pulled out the 135mm and a couple of extension tubes last week, here are some of the keepers. Various combinations of extension tubes.

Small butterfly I think called a Nymph, not sure which one

Mabel Orchard Spider

Grasshopper

Dragonfly

Wow... 10x magnification? How can you achieve it using 135mm + extension tube? I remember my Tamron 90 + 3 extension tubes gives from 1:1 to 2:1 only.

Thanks guys

starjedi - I don't know where you got the 10X magnification idea, I didn't make any claims about that. As far as ratio goes, I don't think I ever got up to 1:1, I think the most extension tubes I used was 75mm on the 135mm lens, that was the dragonfly shot. Don't know what the ratio is, I don't worry about that I just try to get decent pictures...Other shots used 30mm or 50mm of extension tubes.

Here are a couple more taken around the same couple of days.

Lizard, I think this was with around 30mm of exctension tubes, bnut may have been 50mm, I can't remember...one of the few lizard macros I've tried this summer..

Spicebush Swallowtail butterfly that decided to sit still and let me get close, I think this one was 50mm extension tubes on the same 135mm lens. All taken with flash, by the way

You're getting the most out of those tubes, I think!

I've never been able to get a shot of a nymph, they're always just flitting around in the woods when I see them.

The members of this sub-family ( Satyrinae ) are colloquially referred to as "Satyrs". Another common ( North American ) member of this sub-family is the "Common Wood-Nymph". There are a few other (western) species like the
"Small Wood-Nymph", "Great Basin Wood-Nymph", etc.

So you probably got "Nymph" from the name of another member of this sub-family. Unfortunately, these common names don't always align with taxonomic subdivisions.

Cheers, Rick
