Macro with ring light
Posted By: csa, 02-11-2015, 11:27 AM

I just received my Polaroid ring light! This was taken with the full ring light, and minimum lighting, @f11. (Sigma 105 Macro)

One of the LED rings? They're great. Even just to bump the ambient light if you use directed flash, those LED lights are really useful.

Thanks! Macro definitely is fun, with a whole lot to learn!

Now if Spring would hurry up, so I'd have more things to photograph!

Can you say which ring light you bought?

I just purchased a Sigma 105 macro from a member here and now I'm thinking of investing in a ring-light/flash because I have a feeling I will need the extra light!

I'm so lost when it comes to flashes... I know each brand has a particular lens mount, but does the same go for flashes?
I see many "Ring Light FOR CANON" and "Ring Flash FOR NIKON" for sale, but those won't work with my K-30?

Thanks for any help!

Those type of ring lights are manual, so it really doesn't matter what camera it's for, it will work. They are ring lights though, not a true flash. They work ok, but you would better off if you can find a Sunpak DX-8R ring flash. It's an older model but works great, and it has different power settings with manual and auto settings. It can usually be found for around 50 bucks on ebay or at KEH.

Mine is a Polaroid brand; and as bluestringer said, it's manual.

The nice thing about the LED panels etc. is they're a constant light so you can meter via the added ambient light. Even if you're using a flash they can help with the image. There are some hybrids out there, but I'm not sure they're any better. You can get a diffuser for the onboard flash, though, Gary Fong Puffer. The ring light might eclipse too much of it, though.

Hmmm, hadn't noticed it before; not sure what it was.

Looks like whatever it is is under the other wing too. Flies usually have a mushroom/dumbell shaped organ that is used for stability in that area.
