Bees loving Russian Sage flowers.

Lots of tasty sage nectar there. Those are some beaten-up wings on that bumble.
It's a male, I think. We don't have Bombus ternarius here in IL. Or I should clarify, I have never spotted them in northeast IL. Their range includes our area, though. Like rufocinctus, they may just be rare here.

I really love these bees. Very gentle, and so colorful. I have several large Russian Sage bushes, and they really love them.

Nice color and detail. You can see the hair/fur on the bees distinctly.

Definitely a male with all that fluffy pale yellow hair on the head and face and the absence of the pollen basket. This is one of the common bumble bees in this area where it is on the western edge of its range. It loves white clover here.
