Lovely shots.
Exif says f/1.0, is that correct?

Cheers,
Terry

It's a manual lens so f-stop is not recorded. It was f16.

Great shots Dennis. TFS

That Kiron sure does the job.

question, your sunpak is the ring flash right?

Why is it that the ring doesn't show in the eyes of this insect like I've seen with other ring flashes?

Yes, it is a ring flash. I'm not sure why it doesn't show in the dragonfly eyes. I've noticed it in all of my dragonfly photos. Must be something to do with the compound type eyes. I've also noticed it in some fly photos.

That's probably why.

Ah, the Blue Dashers are back. I've been places where there are thousands of them, it's pretty amazing to see. They're great subjects, and will let you get close.
The ring flash is reflecting in the eye, but the eye has a complex shape which distorts it.

Great shots.

That's true. What I didn't like about ring flashes on insects was when the flash was a ring of light. I think it detracts from the overall quality of the photo.

It does detract from the image, but the benefit IMHO is totally worth the artifact. The ring flash has allowed me to get some phenomenal images I certainly would not have without that light source. I'm sure a skilled post-processor would be able to minimize the light ring, but I really doubt it could be completely removed in a way which doesn't visibly alter the image, particularly given the nature of compound eyes.

I know one guy who has built a huge ring diffuser of PET milk jug plastic (re-thermoformed over a buck) and avoids the rings. I'm not sure whether his base is a ring or just a pair of speedlights. It's quite the contraption, though.
