I Took a Rare Setup Out on a Bughunt

I normally don't like using ring flashes but I thought it was about time I took these guys out to cut their teeth together on some bug photography. The lens Is 2:1 with the Dental macro close-up filter. They are all 200iso f22.1/4flash
Pentax K5
Pentax 080Cflash
Pentax-A Dental Macro 4/100mm
Pentax 2:1 Dental Closeup Lens Attachment

Thanks. I haven't seen a complete set available for a long time. I actually tried selling this a few years ago without success but now. I wouldn't sell it.

Other than the engraving on the lens I don't think the lens is any different than the SMC Pentax-A 100mm f/4 Macro. The close-up lenses have a quick change magnetic adapter holder which is not available for the non-dental version. Slipping on a close-up lens to achieve 1:1 or 2:1 magnification certainly faster, less clumsy and bulky than using an extension tube. You'd have to use 150mm of extension for 2:1.

Yes it is the same as the Pentax-A 4/100mm and the magnetic quick release filter is awesome if you want to shoot something far away in a pinch.

Nice work, I have the same lens, ring flash and dental close up kit. The quality of the additional close up lenses is astounding. Originally used with my LX I have also had good success with the rig on the original *ist D where the ttl flash works rather than using manual flash on the newer digital cameras. I would never let mine go either.

I forgot to mention These were all shot in Jpeg. I was comparing the Jpeg engine of the K5 to that of the Fuji XT10 and I forgot to switch back to Raw. I like K5 Jpegs better than Fuji bit I still should have shot in raw.

It's about time some of these insects started taking their oral hygiene seriously!

Very cool.

I started using a ring flash in the field last year, mounted to the FA-100 f2.8. It's been great. Even limited to 1/160 the flash pop in manual mode has been a boon. When the insects behave and let you take a slow setup shot it's astonishing. When chasing insects around, you get what you can! That's where a long lens would be helpful, but as I don't have a DA300, and carrying that along with my already heavy macro setup isn't the most attractive idea...

Thanks..The further your lens is from the subject the more limited your lighting options get.
