I see this discussion stemming from niamerT's comment has grown legs and gone walkabout.
What people shoot is clearly a subjective matter based on personal and perceived public interest.
It is unfair to publicly express disdain towards the subject matter that others shoot, regardless of personal opinion. Each photo should be judged/appreciated according to their creative/artistic/photographic *merit* and not on subject.

Alex, I agree with you on the difficulty of trying to vote between 100+, sometimes even 300+ images on a monthly contest. I do wonder how 17 votes from each person will assist in differentiating the #1 image from the #17 image as judged by the member. This might be a good point to discuss with Adam.

But for now, let's move on with the votes!

Photography is art. Art is subjective. A photo that you think is a "snapshot" could be award winning by someone else. My advice is to listen to your instincts and submit what you think is great. Don't listen to "them."
I think that's one of the smartest things I've ever read.

First of all, you were rude.

Second, children are just about the most beautiful beings in existence. I sure hope people don't stop posting pictures of children.

Third, what hasn't been done to death? If we eliminate subject matter based on what someone is sick of seeing, we'd likely have nobody participating.

Fourth, there are all levels of photographers here . . . do you want to say someone just learning or trying out something for the first time, something that others may have done a million times, is not welcome? Why not welcome everyone, and encourage people to keep shooting and learn?

Finally, a child, like anyone, can be a great subject for a portrait. I liked the photographer's use of light in #48, and I thought #153 might be the best portrait of the lot. Now that I think about it, from now on I may vote for every single shot of a child I see!
That #153 caught my attention too. Great photo. Looks like a scene from Harry Potter don't you think?

There's some fantastic photos in this contest.
For me, Black & White is very interesting to judge. some subjects just don't do it for me. When I see a flower in black & white my brain rejects it knowing that it's supposed to have colours for all to see. It just doesn't look right. The same goes for some other subjects too.

Some really good use of light and focus in a lot of these photos. I found a few that stand out and will get my vote.
I reckon monochromatic photography is rather difficult to compose given that colour is normal and black & white is the invention.

Lol, well our differing generations might be showing here. I was reminded of Freddie Bartholomew about to enter his evil uncle's castle in the 1938 movie "Kidnapped."

I, for one, am tired of seeing snapshots of people's kids.

I'm sure you think your kid is the best thing to grace the face of this Earth, but it's just another kid to the rest of us.
My son may not be the greatest thing on earth to you, but the fact that he is serving in the US Army right now makes him pretty dang great no matter how you look at it.

I think some of the pictures of the children were done pretty well. Ask your self if there is something interesting int he picture or is it just showing a pretty smile. Looks like some had some drama around the young faces. One of those "Eye of he Beholder" kind of things. Some tell a story of a place and time that looks different to the life style of the US. I think when a picture makes you ask questions it has moved you.

I almost always disagree with contest winners work. But since they are a concensus of the judges, I can accept the result. What I am curious about, and what would be educational, would be if there was some postings about which particular aspects of the photo gained the vote for favorite. Maybe I would learn something I hadn't thought about.

We've got enough entries to have a runoff within the top (17 was it?). Sort of a two stage voting process where the first poll is for who you'd like in the finals with a bunch of votes per person, and the second one you get one vote to give to who you think should be the winner.

I'd like to encourage all who have ideas about how better the monthly contests should run to read and respond to the thread dedicated to this discussion here:

Thanks.

Actually, thinking about this comment; for example, if the competition theme was 'portaits' I don't think it would matter if the subject was a relation of the photographer or not. In fact sometimes the 'relationship' the subject has with the photographer can be what makes a portrait brilliant, so I guess if it were the child of a photographer this could be an advantage.

Also, I know a lot of photos I have taken that I think are terrific, is not necessarily shared by others - no matter what the subject of the photo is! - it's entirely personal.
I agree with you, in that usually there is a story behind each picture although the significance is so personal that it is lost to anybody outside the circle of knowledge.
There were some good compositions based on sound techniques and rules of thumb, but none that seem to tell me a story, or intrigue me to want to look longer to find the story in the picture.

... or am I expecting too much?

I've already voted and chose only 4 entries which I felt were really good as a Black and White photo. There were a lot of great entries, but then I think those 4 really stood out. Congratulations to everyone who submitted!
