Excellent entries though stunning and quite confusing to rule out the best, the category itself simplifies the basic composition, "shadows".

You could see silhouttes as shadows, you are after all photographing the shadow side of an object or person. The contest said Shadows, so even if you would have been able to take a pic of the band The Shadows, you have taken a pic of shadows. It is just how you look and intrepetate the theme.
So to say that silhoutes can't be here because they aren't shadows, isn't really true.

A silhouette is an outline or an image of the dark side of an object where no details of the object can be seen, but a shadow isn't a shadow until it's cast upon another object such as the ground or a wall or perhaps a shadow of your nose cast onto your cheek.

If you talk about a shadow, yes. But the theme is "shadows", not "a shadow". Therefore open for intrepetation of the photographer and viewer.

but then again, even if you have a the ä shadow" without specifying what should be. For a photographer, it still is open for intrepetation. You could take a photo of something that is called ''a shadow''

I'll never participate. Too much pictures are only Photoshop or similar picture. You get one element add another...Too easy.
I'm desapointed to see that a lot of photographer are not enable to take a good picture only with their camera.
Modern time...

you should have seen in analogue times, getting one sort of film for certain circumstances. Another for another. Just to get the right contrast. And all the burning and dodging in the darkroom with B&W. Just getting a photo with your camera has never happend. There has always been some form of editing.

Sooo, it's one shadow or more than one shadow.
Makes no difference to me.

A shadow is an area where direct light from a light source cannot reach due to obstruction by an object.
So therefore does not need to cast upon another object. It is the dark area behind an object where the light does not reach. How you photograph it, is up to you. There are many, many ways to do it. You can give your intrepetation to it. by like making a silhouet.
