Great photos... a lot of talent

I wish there was a way I could deselect the ones I don't like particularly much... would ease the selection of the ones that I really like...

To choose the best of 115 photos the way it is set up today, is a bit difficult... just an idea...

What a great field of submissions. It was really difficult to narrow it down to 11. So many excellent images had to go unchosen.

I totally agree with you Ebbe S. A way to deselect would definitely make the selection process easier, and might encourage more members to vote.

Inspiring images. Gave me ideas on taking a shot or two during the winter.
I have to admit that the workflow and the principle of voting is a bit unusual. It would have been easier for selecting if there was a selection box next to each image, rather than having them at the beginning. I did by mistake select more than 11 images, and it was difficult to go back and deselect again.

Many of these photos could have only been taken with a totally weather proof camera/lens combo! As you all know, a trait Pentax is famous for.

OK, take this tongue in cheek, but I know I've spent too much time around frozen water when I catch myself judging on the distinctions between snow and ice, hoar, rime... you name it.

"I mean sure it's a lovely photo, but... that kinda looks like frost to me".

So does it have to be technically *snow* to count? (kidding)

No snow in my part of the world but I enjoy seeing it from the warmth of an Aussie summer. I am no expert on the subject matter but I appreciate nice photos and there are certainly some very nice ones here.

Without giving away my selection, I'll give some background on how I chose so people who entered my understand my choice.
I was looking for good exposure, without blown highlights, too dark in shadows - Pentax DSLRs can shoot raw, and even Photoshop Elements has ACR so there's no excuse for bad exposure. I was also looking for sharpness unless soft focus was inteintionally being used to effect. Given the huge range of K mount lenses out there including some very cheap used lenses that still offer oustanding IQ, there's no excuse for softness where it doesn't appear to be the intent.
Beyond that, I was looking for good composition, and finally something that clearly jumped out at me and yelled 'snow'. There were some very nice images I rejected on this last point, because it wasn't clear enough that they were about snow. Some had snow in them, but it was a sort of peripheral thing, others could be snow or frost or even something else.

That's a very good post, but I just wanted to add that as far as exposure, there is some leeway due to the variety of monitors out there and how they are set on individual screens. Also, the Mac/PC operating platform difference also comes into play. Sometimes it is easy to tell the Mac photos since they are all too light, and the PC photos because they are all too dark and muddy. Sometimes it is difficult to find a happy medium.
