Project focus: Artificial smoke made cheap (and blue)

The smoke was constructed using a LED based headlight from a bicycle and a string. String attached to the light source and by moving the light over the object (the cup) it illuminates the string and due to longer shutter speed the camera won't be able to register the movements other than catching it as "smoke".

That is clever, well executed. I would have liked the smoke a little more visible.

Very inventive, I wouldn't have thought of that. When I do commercial product shots like that, that really need steam or smoke I usually composite the image with CGI smoke effects, because you have some real control over how it looks, and your clothes don't end up smelling like smoke or incense*.

*I get headaches when i'm around something that has a strong scent.

Thanks, but I cannot take any creds for the technique though since I read about it on a forum somewhere. :-)

It took at least 10-20 shots to achieve smoke that felt natural and real, so I decided to settle with this one, but you can find a shot containing more smoke in my gallery.
