Contest Number: 104 Contest Theme: Fill the Frame Lens: DA* 300mm F4 ED [IF] SDM Camera: K-3 Shutter Speed: 1/320s Aperture: F4
Posted By: wmarkroberts, 04-16-2015, 10:25 AM

An adult male Green-crowned Brilliant hummingbird in Monteverde, Costa Rica, poses for his portrait. K-3 with DA* 300mm, 1/320s, f/4, ISO 2500. While I'm aware I haven't completely filled the frame with the bird, I hope that viewers will find that this composition still satisfies the spirit of this month's contest since he does occupy much of the frame, and by shooting wide open I managed to not "leave any disturbing or unnecessary details in the background or anywhere in the frame" per the rules. I did experiment with tight crops but I found they left the composition feeling unbalanced.

Heartfelt thanks to everyone above for your positive feedback! I particularly appreciate your remarks about the bokeh, as I consider it critical to this photo. It's not often that I find a good subject with a pleasing natural background far enough behind it to create an effect like this.

Maybe someone would say this colibry isn't exactly fill entire frame, but background is very nicely done, colours are in good composite,
and it is a part of picture as well.
Without background the picture will not be the same, and it will be less good. It's a good choice to leave it, because colibry is very delicate little bird,
and closer shoot would be destroy it's tiny pretty delicacy.

So, it is well balanced, and pic is just beatifull. Thumbs up. Nominate

Holy cow. This is amazing. I never thought I'd see a hummingbird in such detail-- it must have been pretty relaxed for the photo, if it was fluffing up its feathers this much.
