Contest #113 - January, 2016 (Composite - K-50 Prize!)
Posted By: Ole, 01-03-2016, 05:36 AM

The theme for the official Pentax Forums photo contest for January, 2016 is:

Composite

For this month's contest the theme is "Composite". You image must be a composite of two or more exposures, but you are free to select the subject. The final image can be created in-camera (multi-exposure or interval composite) or in post processing as you see fit. Be prepared to explain the steps you took to create the final image.

Note that for the purpose of this contest, HDR photos and stitched panoramas are not going to be considered composites. For your photo to be considered a composite, at least two frames have to overlap in some way, and those frames must differ in terms of composition.

Click here to Submit a Photo

Remember: your submission must be taken with a Pentax camera or a Ricoh digital camera and be scaled to web-friendly resolution. After clicking on the link above attach your photo using our attachment system (preferred) or link to an external image. 1 submission per person.

And don't forget to nominate your favorites from last month

Prizes

1st place: Pentax K-50 DSLR body + homepage feature
2nd place: $50 B&H Photo gift card
3rd place:
1-year premium forum account upgrade
4th place: 50 sheets of premium photo paper from Red River Paper.

Does "composite" includes Panorama stitches or HDR Bracketting ?

Not really, since those techniques just get around the physical limitations of lenses / sensors to produce a single image.

I've never done composite before. Do I need to merge 2 or more "full" images? Or I can cut and paste a part of one into another one? (say the horizon and over is one image, anything under the horizon is another one) Does that make sense? I assume composite is not the same as collage, right?

You can work with entire images or parts of images- it's entirely up to you. And yes, a collage would be something different.

One example of a composite would be the sky from a star trail shot merged with a foreground painted with a flashlight and shot during a separate exposure.

And then, a character taken from the street, cutted & pasted onto a beach would be a collage?

Newbie question - Did I do something wrong?

I read through all the rules, and requirements. I posted my first entry to a contest here, and thought I had done everything correctly. But it has been two days since I posted it. There have been no more entries, and no one is even looking at it, according to views. Other than me checking in on it. the views remain the same. I am beginning to think I did something wrong. Would someone please let me know what I did wrong, and if there is a way to correct it?

You can't see other entries. I myself can't see yours.

I don't see anybody's entries for contest #113, which may be the way it is supposed to be?? Maybe they open them for viewing and voting at the end of the month. I could attach a pdf of what I see for my entry, but I wouldn't want to do anything that might disqualify me. If entries aren't supposed to be seen, then my posting a pdf would be a no-no. Do I sound completely lost on what to do? If so, then that is accurate.

the submission forum is locked, so it is intentionnal indeed that you can't see entries. Now, I don't see any rule saying you can't share your work early, but I wouldn't, because:

A) It would give ideas to improve to other contestants: "hey they did that but i've seen it and i have ideas to improve on the idea".
B) It might discourage other contestants: "oh darn that one looks exactly like what i'm working on... Ok let's find another idea", or "I'll never be as good, I give up".
C) It might cause unwanted competition, that could lead to a bad mood for the contest.
D) It will probably kill kittens in Sri Lanka.

I'm a cat person, so for the sake of kittens in Sri Lanka I will not post a PDF of my entry page. Just knowing the entries are locked, makes me feel pretty sure that I did everything correctly in submitting my entry. Thanks for your help, I'll shut up now.

Side note, is that Arthur C. Clarke (author of 2001: A Space Odyssey) retired to Sri Lanka from 1956 until he died in 2008, supposedly a cat lover.

You can't see others' submissions until after the contest closes. As long as you see one thread on the page below, and it has a thumbnail, you've entered correctly.

Nope, you want to have different images on top of each other, not next to each other.

With this as a requirement I would guess that working with film is ok.
Use film which is mainly, a Fujifilm or Kodak "sensor". Then "scan" the negatives with a Pentax or Ricoh digital camera.
