Simple light fixture cast some complicated shadows.

Brilliant, witty, and captivating! The reflection above feels like the sun radiating light -- as if the lamp is harnessing solar energy through the arm-like shadow shape connecting them. This shadow seems more tangible and three-dimensional than projection as it appears to twist across the space. Amusing and surreal because the "sun" is actually being projected by the artificial light. The subtle contrast of the projection against the higher contrast of the lamp bulb combined with the delicious range of tonalities creates a mysterious, dramatic "film noir" effect. My mind is filled with questions about what is being lit -- what happened there? So many possibilities and stories to think about. The image also works beautifully as pure abstract with the placement of sharp diagonal between the soft textured concentric circles above and the more solid circle of the lamp. This photograph is compelling me to continue looking... NOMINATED!
